Prof. Hirono is based at Tokyo University of Marine Sciences an Technology, Japan, where he mainly investigates on molecular biology, gene, cDNA, Olive flounder and Virology. He has researched molecular biology in several fields, including Gene expression, Edwardsiella tarda, Open reading frame, Peptide sequence and Exon. His Gene study incorporates themes from Shrimp and Penaeus monodon. In addition, he has included themes like Amino acid and RNA and DNA biology. His Olive flounder research integrates issues from Interferon, and Southern blot in Flounder. His study in Virology is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing from both Pagrus major, Immune system and Cyprinid herpesvirus 3.

Title: The emerging field of neuroimmune communication in fish: From mucosal barriers to the CNS and back.

Prof. Salinas is an Evolutionary Immunologist at the Biology Department, University of New Mexico, USA. Her research focuses on mucosal immunity and its evolution in vertebrates. Mucosal surfaces are at the interface between hosts and the environment and therefore integrate the external and internal signals. Her laboratory has very diverse research interests and currently has active projects in trout, zebrafish, lungfish, mice, and humans. In the recent years, she has specialized in the understanding of nasal immunity and the neuroimmune interactions that occur in the olfactory-central nervous system axis in response to microorganisms.

Title: Addressing novel nanovaccine strategies for Tilapia.

Prof. Thompson is a Principal Investigator at Moredun Research Institute, UK, where she heads the Aquaculture Research Group. Prior to joining the group, she was a Reader at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling. She has over 20 years of experience in fish immunology and has published over 125 publications relating to fish immunity, vaccine development, host-pathogen interactions, and functional feeds and immunostimulants. Her research interests are focused on the development of vaccines against viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens of fish, and antibody and molecular-based detection methods for fish pathogens. In addition, she examines the immune response in different fish species and factors which influence this response, screen the host/pathogen (viral, bacterial, and fungal) interactions relating to fish, and develop alternative therapies for disease control.

Title: Blood cells formation in crustaceans.

Prof. Söderhäll investigates at Uppsala University, Sweden the innate immune reactions in invertebrates and compare these reactions with those present in vertebrates. One example is melanisation; a reaction that is present in virtually all organisms, but detailed studies on this reaction is mainly performed in crustaceans and a few insects. His Laboratory use molecular, cell biological methods, and investigate how microorganisms, such as fungi, bacteria and viruses interact with crayfish as host animals. An important process under study is how blood cell-forming stem cells develop into mature blood cells and how this process is affected by various infections.

The Steinel Lab’s focus is in understanding the interplay and co-evolution of host and pathogens. Using threespine stickleback as a model organism, her Lab studies teleost adaptive immunity, the manipulation of adaptive immunity by parasites, and the co-evolution of host and parasite factors. The Villablanca Lab’s seeks to understand the genetic, cellular, and environmental contribution towards inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) susceptibility. He integrates cellular immunology, bioinformatics, and the creation of novel in vivo models to ultimately interrogate the function of IBD-associated polymorphisms as well as to study host-microbiota interactions.
